2009 YOUTH ADVOCACY DAY

JEL has led the fight against Big Tobacco and their constant attempts to addict us to their deadly product. In two years we've raised the cigarette tax and celebrated as Iowa went smokefree! We've done so much that some JEL members are wondering 'what's next?'

There is still a lot to do. We must keep pushing back against the industry that has taken our loved ones and is still trying to profit from addiction. But one of the best things to do RIGHT NOW is to tell other people why you think JEL is important.

See, we aren't the only one's who've noticed what a great job we've done. The Legislature, who make the laws, has also noticed and is happy with our progress, BUT, several legislators think the fight is over. That feeling, and the fact that the economy is in recession, means that the future of JEL could be in trouble.

SO, we want YOU to tell your legislator why JEL is important to you. We want YOU to let them know what your JEL Chapter has done and what you're planning to do. We want YOU to make sure they know JEL is alive and well in their communities.

The following pages will serve as a guide for you, your friends and your chapter sponsor to learn:

* What else JEL can do
* When to meet with your legislators
* Practice talking to him/her

2009 Youth Advocacy Day

We are also excited to offer a contest to chapters who meet with their legislators and tell us about it. Winning chapters will receive an award at this year's JEL Summit and can basically brag that their Chapter is the best in Iowa. If you have any questions you can email Garin at info@jeliowa.org. He's happy to help!
